Six Weeks Evaluations: The International Candies Litter : Hapi (Ruby)

 At Six Weeks of age we evaluate our litters using a six point set of criteria. Five of these points are derived from the American Kennel Club Standard for the breed. One point is given that is subjective and purely based on what we like to see for coloring and aesthetic qualities. It is difficult to look into a puppy's future and see what they will truly become, but at six weeks there is enough of the traits emerging in appearance and personality to give it a good guess.

Our breeding program has been aimed toward breeding a smaller form of Basset Hound, something that won't exceed forty pounds when fully adult and perhaps less than fourteen inches at the shoulder. In this litter we only see two pups of this smaller form developing, four which will be of the more normal American Basset size (perhaps fifty pound fully grown and fifteen inches at the shoulder) and one standard sized little boy who will likely top out at sixty pounds. All of the Candies show very good traits, but as is the usual, the sire (Rocky) brought into the mix all that we expect in an American Basset Hound. The very long ears, head shape, boxy nose shape, and heavy foreleg size are all of Rocky's very good features. Lilly, the Dame, is a good example of the smaller form Basset and has very good features as well.

Ruby is fortunate to have a sister going along with her to her new life. But, as much as I love this little girl, I don't envy her new parents. The two girls we had, when combined, are going to be a hand full of fun. This girl is fearless and wanders off very often to find new trouble to get into. Her goal is World Domination, and nothing less. When combinedw with a sister of much the same temprement, watch out and lock the gate. 

Structurally Ruby is a very good medium form of the breed. She is very well put together with a great head shape, well domed but not rounded, from which extraordinarily long ears hage in true Basset Style. Her snout is a bit smaller than most but it is boxy with less than generous fews. Her jaw set is great. From her neck to the round she is heaily built with very heavy foreleg bones and heavy paws. Her neck meets with her stocky shoulders then tapers wonderfully back to small hips. Ruby has good stance so there's not much likelyhood of hip issues later on. Expect a forty-five pound adult Basset. She is a wonderful little girl.

She is covered in a nicely symettrical coat of deep mahagony Red with shit collar and matching shoes. Her tail tip is very slightly white. Her face is very pretty.

Ruby gets all six of the points we use to judge against the Standard, there simply is nothing wrong about her build. She also gets the full point for pretty. She is a lovely little girl Basset and might be bred if rights are secured. Six out of six points. Not a show dog, for a few minor reasons, but will definetly be a lovely pet.
