Singeing the end of strapping is important to how the edge and buckle straps will perform as they are used. Singeing is simply using heat to melt the end fibers and letting them cool into a tougher singular surface. For this you might use a disposable lighter, or a match, or some other source of low flame, (such as a candle). Be careful with your fire, but don't worry that the strapping will burn quickly. 

Be careful when you do this. While it is not very dangerous, it is somewhat dangerous and things can go wrong. Handling the hot material, even after it stops showing signs of flame or heat, may still be too hot to handle.  And any time you are handling fire near flammable stuff, like sewn materials, threads, and fiber dust, you can get a fire started. Be careful.
