Rocketdog Bassets: Do It Yourself Rocketdog Winter Coat Kits

No matter the size, or breed, of your dog we can make coats to fit nearly any size in both our Ready to Wear Rocketdog Winter Coat or DIY Rocketdog Winter Coat Kit, but there are only four standard sizes so we also offer a Custom Sized Coat and DIY Kit for dogs of other sizes.

Our Standard sized Coats and DIY Kits are patterned to fit Basset Hounds at most stages of life. But because Basset Hounds are a medium to large sized dog (with stumpy legs) the coats will fit most medium to large sizes dogs of other breeds.

Measure your dog to find the three vital sizes before deciding on the size or deciding you need a custom sized coat or kit. (The straps are adjustable.)

Before deciding to buy a Do It Yourself Kit please be aware that this is not a complicated thing to sew, but it is slightly more difficult than a beginner kit to assemble. The Small size DIY Coat Kit fits a dog that is long and lean. At One year old a Basset is quite athletic and thin in the body. These are the measurements for the Small Sized Winter Coats and Kits:

The Back length is 20 inches, measured from the base of the neck to the top of the tail.
The Chest (the distance around the dog just behind the forelegs is eighteen inches and can be adjusted as small as sixteen inches and as large as 20 inches.
The Neck is Fourteen inches and can be adjusted to thirteen inches or fifteen inches as needed.

The Medium sized DIY Coat kit fits a dog that is a bit heavier than a puppy, but still not fully grown. At two years old Bassets deepen in the chest and bones get heavier, but they are still quite athletic and sometimes a bit thin, so a Medium coat will fit best.

The Back length is twenty-two inches.
The Chest is twenty inches and is adjustable two inches smaller or larger.
The Neck is sixteen inches and is adjustable one inch smaller or larger.

The Large sized DIY kit fits a dog which is full sized, but perhaps hasn't gained its final weight. At three years old Bassets become true adults and stop growing a larger frame, but they are usually still quite athletic and a bit larger. So a large coat works really well for most adult Dogs.

The Back of a large coat is twenty-two inches, the same length as our extra large coat.
The Chest of a large sized coat is twenty-two inches and can be adjusted to fit two inches larger or smaller.
The Neck size is eighteen inches, but is adjustable one inch larger or smaller.

The Extra-large DIY Kit fits a larger dog. After three years old Bassets begin moving around less and sleeping more. For some, not all, the extra-large size is the right fit later in life.

The Back Length is twenty-four inches long and this may be a bit longer than some dogs need.
The Chest is also Twenty-four inches and can be adjusted as large as twenty-six inches or as small as twenty-two inches.
The Neck size is eighteen inches and is adjustable one inch larger or smaller.
