The Edge Binding Strap is the most difficult part of this project. If taken as a series of smaller steps it is not very difficult, but where the material turns a corner the sewing might be a bit tricky. Take your time in sewing this strap and it will come together pretty quickly.

It does no good to try and measure the length of the strapping prior to sewing, the length will vary a bit from size to size, so we allowed enough strapping to fit around even the largest coat. Begin by finding a place to start sewing. You may or may not wish to singe the end of this strap at the starting end.

Where this project takes some skill is in sewing around corners on the work.

Where you are sewing at corners we find it helpful to hold the strapping in line with the stitch and to move the material around under the strapping. Where the strapping rounds the corners the strapping will turn upward, this is a good thing and it will ease the process of finishing the Edge Binding.

As you near the starting point of the Edge Binding and have rounded the final corner, find a point in the strapping where the strap you are sewing overlaps the point where the strap began. Allow an inch or two of overlap and cut the strap off at this point. Singe the edge of this strap. This edge will remain open and so may become frayed if it is not singed. Then sew the strap down so that it covers the beginning point completely.

Up until this point in the project, things have been simple and relatively easy to sew. This next step is what make this an intermediate sewing project instead of a simple project. Be very careful in this next step, especially in the corners around the neck tabs where your fingers will be close to the needle. These points are tricky.

This stitch is difficult, take it slow in the corners and be careful.

We don't find it helpful to hot iron the edge binding. Pressing is best done with a
warm iron, should you want to iron the work before proceeding.
