March 28, 2017 Puppy Map

This map of the new babies. It seems easier to know who they are by the patterns on their backs.

Thumbprint 11.7 oz. Tri-colored female

Somehow there is eleven this morning

When everyone quieted down last night I could swear there were ten babies.  This morning there were eleven. This is a bit of a problem.

We're going to need to bottle fed some babies to keep everyone healthy.

And we are going to have to sort them to find the newcomer.  Pics will follow.

March 27, 2017 Cinnamon in labor

Birthing puppies is such a simple thing. You set things up and the female does all of the work. But birthing Bassets is a bit more work, especially when doing it in an insufficient place (like our front room). You have to keep track of the female so she chooses to drop the puppies where you want them or they end up on the carpet in one corner or the other.

After last year's litters we decided to wait until we are moved out the the Farm, but Clarke Bar found a way over the fence and took the shot so we are birthing puppies in the front room one last time. Eventually we will use one of our tiny home halves to create a proper whelping kennel. A place where everyone is comfortable, clean, and rested.

As of eight this morning the Cinnamon Bear has been in labor for about eighteen hours. We have been taking shifts. Sleeping four hours at a time. Cinnamon has been working in cycles. Walking around, and then pushing for ten minutes or so, then walking around some more. At some point a nose will pop out and then things should go pretty quickly.

Then I'll write the next entry, pictures included.
